Michigan falls are beautiful — and they're brutal on gutters. Between the leaf load from our mature trees and the transition into freezing temperatures, fall is when most gutter failures start. Here's what to do before it's too cold to fix.
1. Clean Out All Debris
Clear every inch of your gutters before the first hard freeze. Frozen debris expands, separates seams, and pulls gutters away from the fascia.
2. Flush Downspouts
Clogged downspouts cause water to back up into gutters and under roof edges. Run a hose through every downspout until water flows freely from the bottom.
3. Inspect All Hangers
Sagging gutters are a sign of failing hangers. Replace bent or missing hangers before the snow load arrives — you'll save yourself from full gutter replacement.
4. Check Slope
Water should flow steadily toward downspouts. Use a level to check. Sections that pool water will freeze, overflow, and ice-dam in winter.
5. Consider Gutter Guards
For homes with lots of trees, gutter guards are worth the investment. Crown Roofing installs several systems; we can recommend the right one for your setup.
